Legislative Delegation Meetings

In theory, Legislative Delegation meetings are opportunities for citizens to voice their concerns to their representative and senator without having to travel to Tallahassee. In practice, they’re just one more piece of evidence of why our political system is a leftist ratchet, always moving toward more government involvement in everything. The meetings don’t accomplish anything other than stroke the egos of the legislators who get to sit high on the dais and look down on the peasants who prostrate themselves and stroke the legislators’ egos while asking for their priorities to be supported in Tallahassee. Each meeting starts with constitutional officers and local elected officials getting first swing at the legislators. They’ll be asking for state money for payroll, pensions, pet projects, etc. The most common request in our area is small towns asking for water treatment plants to make up for 30-50-years of neglect from local officials diverting money to their non-profit buddies that help them get reelected. After this comes the public comment portion. This would be where regular citizens come forward with their concerns, but most of them can’t be bothered because they have real jobs and can’t waste several hours in the middle of the day. Instead you’ll see a seemingly endless parade of leftist activists (most claiming to be non-partisan). They’ll push for the standard leftist priorities: more gun laws, more environmental protection, lighter penalties and restored voting rights for criminals, more porn in schools, etc.. If you think this is a cynical take on a legislative delegation meeting, you probably haven’t been to one. I just went to ours and I’m still disgusted.

There’s no central listing for these on the state House or Senate websites. Legislators set up their own meetings so getting the details can be difficult. They seem to want to keep them secret so only the usual activists show up. Despite covering ours for the last five years, we were not on the media list that got notified by our local representative’s office.
